Transitional Services

THG’s North Hills Prep places great emphasis upon transition to post-graduation success. Students who graduate with a clear idea of their next step typically do better in the future. Planning for that future while in high school is crucial.

In addition to the practical, social and emotional aspects of transition that our counselors provide to students, THG’s North Hills Prep has several specific Transition opportunities available:

Career Cruising
THG’s North Hills Prep offers Career Cruising, a software program geared to assist both students and their parents in exploring career options and planning post high-school goals. Each student at THG’s North Hills Prep is given a Career Cruising account and portfolio at no additional cost. The site offers assessment tools, detailed occupation profiles, and comprehensive post-secondary education information. It also has an SAT/ACT preparation component.

Workability
Funded by the California State Department of Education, the Workability program assists special education students with transition to employment. In addition to coaching on interviewing skills, resume writing, behavioral expectations, and job interests, the Workability Job Club counselor assists in placing students into training positions.

Department of Rehabilitation
Students can be referred to the State Department of Rehabilitation (DOR). Its mission is to provide services and advocacy resulting in employment, independent living, and equality for individuals with disabilities. DOR can continue to work with the student throughout their adulthood, tailoring a program to the student’s particular employment goals. DOR services include:
  • Counseling and guidance;
  • Referrals and assistance to get services for other agencies;
  • Job search and placement assistance;
  • Vocational and other training services;
  • Evaluation on physical and mental impairments;
  • On-the-job or personal assistance services;
  • Interpreter services;
  • Occupational licenses, tools, equipment, initial stocks, and supplies;
  • Technical assistance for self-employment;
  • Rehabilitation assistive technology;
  • Supported employment services;
  • Services to the family;
  • Transportation as required, such as travel and related expenses, that is necessary to enable the student to participate in a vocational rehabilitation service.
