High School
Transitioning from middle school to high school can be an exciting but challenging time for students. Our high school program at North Hills Prep is specifically designed to support and guide students through this important phase of their education. We understand the importance of preparing them for post-secondary education and beyond. As a Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredited program, we offer a comprehensive A-G curriculum that includes core subjects such as Mathematics, English, Science, and Social Sciences, along with a range of electives. Our experienced teachers and staff provide a nurturing environment that encourages students to explore their interests, develop critical thinking skills, and build strong study habits. We also promote collaboration and teamwork, helping students develop essential social skills.
At North Hills Prep, we believe in holistic education that goes beyond academics. We offer a variety of music, arts, clubs and service learning opportunities. These activities help students develop leadership skills, foster creativity and build character. The program maintains small class sizes to ensure personalized attention and a low student-to-teacher ratio. This allows teachers to build strong relationships with students and provide individualized instruction based on their specific needs.
The program incorporates a team of dedicated counselors who provide regular individual and group therapy sessions. These sessions focus on developing coping strategies, enhancing emotional regulation skills, and building healthy relationships.
Recognizing the importance of preparing students for life beyond high school, the program emphasizes the development of essential life skills. This includes teaching practical life skills such as budgeting, time management, problem-solving, and decision-making, as well as cultivating social skills and conflict resolution techniques.
The program utilizes a positive behavior support system to encourage and reinforce appropriate behavior. This includes implementing a reward system, acknowledging achievements, and helping students recognize the impact of negative behaviors on their goals and their community. The focus is on promoting a positive and respectful learning environment.
The program allows for a collaborative approach involving teachers, therapists, parents, and other professionals to ensure a holistic and comprehensive support system for the students. Regular communication and meetings are held to discuss student progress, address concerns, and make necessary adjustments to the educational plan.
Join us at North Hills Prep as we strive to provide an enriching educational experience that empowers students to reach their full potential and become lifelong learners.
Curriculum
As a Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredited program, North Hills Prep provides students with all A-G requirements for post-secondary programs. The curriculum is engaging and tailored to motivate our students while providing them with the necessary academic skills and knowledge in Math, English, Science, and Social Sciences. Enrichment classes are also included to offer students opportunities for personal growth and success outside of traditional academic subjects.
English
The English curriculum aims to improve reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Teachers provide differentiated instruction, such as small group reading sessions, individualized writing support, and multimedia resources to cater to diverse learning styles. Incorporating literature that reflects students’ experiences and interests enhances their engagement and motivation. Additionally, providing opportunities for creative expression, such as through drama or poetry, helps students build confidence and improve communication skills.
Math
The Math curriculum focuses on building foundational skills while incorporating real-life applications and problem-solving activities. Our small class sizes and use of visual aids, manipulatives, and technology-based resources we employ aides in differentiating the instruction. The curriculum is structured to allow for individualized pacing and provide opportunities for hands-on learning experiences.
Social Science
The Social Sciences curriculum focuses on helping students develop a deeper understanding of history, government, economics, and cultural studies. Incorporating interactive activities, multimedia resources, and field trips make the content more engaging and relevant. Using visual aids, graphic organizers, and simplified texts can help students with learning challenges access the material. Additionally, incorporating discussions and debates promote critical thinking and social-emotional development.
Science
The Science curriculum emphasizes inquiry-based learning, hands-on experiments, and real-world connections. Incorporated into the classes are visual aids, demonstrations, and multimedia resources to enhance understanding. Providing opportunities for collaborative group work and project-based learning also helps engage students and foster their curiosity and critical thinking skills.
Physical Education
Tellus rutrum tellus pellentesque eu tincidunt tortor aliquam nulla. Nunc mattis enim ut tellus. Quis ipsum suspendisse ultrices gravida dictum fusce ut placerat. Cursus eget nunc scelerisque viverra mauris in. Purus non enim praesent elementum facilisis leo. Tempus quam pellentesque nec nam aliquam sem et. Ac felis donec et odio pellentesque diam. Electives
Enrichment classes play a vital role in the high school curriculum for students with learning challenges. These classes offer opportunities for students to explore their interests, develop talents, and build self-esteem. Enrichment classes include a wide range of subjects such as art, music, drama, physical education, technology, and vocational training. These classes provide students with alternative ways to succeed academically while fostering their social-emotional well-being and promoting overall personal growth.
High School Teacher
As an educator of North Hills Prep High School for over 2 decades, I have acquired some priceless pearls of wisdom that I would like to share with you to help ensure a successful high school experience. These will be the definitive years of your life prior to your inevitable transition into adulthood. During the academic school year, you will embark on a journey that may be unknown and unexpected, but you are built for this challenge. Your high school years should be viewed as precious stones, so it is imperative that you approach your educational process with intentional care, preparation, respect, and mindful achievement.
High school is an important step in your educational journey to assist in preparing for college, trade schools, and voc-educational training. In addition to assisting in post career objectives, it is also a beneficial guide in developing your skills as a student and as a community member. Here are some invaluable pearls for your academia treasure chest.
First Gem: Challenge Yourself. You don’t always have the flexibility to choose your subjects, especially at the beginning of high school, but sometimes you can choose the level of the course. When you can, you should challenge yourself by increasing your study habits, requesting extra credit assignments, or enrolling in levels that are more difficult in your school’s curriculum, such as honors, AP or courses at a local community college. You might also be interested in learning about some new topics on your own to further challenge yourself as a learner! All of the skills you build in high school provide an important foundation for your life after graduation.
Second Gem: Set Goals Throughout High School. As a freshman, the first year of high school can be challenging so it’s alright if it doesn’t go perfectly. Maybe your grades aren’t as strong as you’d like them to be for the first year, or maybe you didn’t get involved in as many activities as you had hoped. If any of these scenarios prove to be one of your first-year outcomes, there is no need to become consumed with worry or regret, because you will have the opportunity to grow immensely each year of high school. Throughout your time in high school, try to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses, and set some realistic goals for the next upcoming school year. Additionally, you should make an effort to explore a new club, or improve your class participation and homework completion by developing more effective time management skills. Understand that Rome wasn’t built in a day; therefore, you are not expected to perfect your recipe for a successful academic school experience in your first year of high school. However, at every step of your journey, you should be learning, embracing growth, and addressing any mistakes that you can rectify in the next upcoming academic year.
Third Gem (The Charm): Explore New Opportunities. Last but certainly not least, as a high school student, you should explore all your realistic options, and leave no stone unturned. You may find when you begin high school that you have more freedom and flexibility in your schedule than you had when you were in middle school. If this proves to be true, it might benefit you to move beyond your comfort zone and explore a new course, learn a new skill, or meet a new peer on your high school campus. Thus, developing curiosity and intrepidness in high school will enable you to get more out of your time in college, trade schools, or vocational-ed training, and it could possibly introduce you to people and opportunities you may not have otherwise encountered.
Moreover, it is my ultimate responsibility and aspiration that your time here at NHP will be spent learning, growing, and experiencing victorious academic outcomes, because YOUR success reflects OUR commitment at NHP to ensure that you have all of the tools and academic support to reach and achieve all of your specific academic goals. We look forward to seeing you this academic school year…Let’s GO SPARTANS!!!
Best Regards,
Chrystal Smith
